I have read many resources on relationships and marriage and they were all helpful...but also at times left you feeling like you just read a direction manual without the troubleshooting section. The Marriage Garden appears to incorporate many of the messages found in other books, but takes them one step farther. This wonderful resource blends research and practicality in a down-to-earth and simple-to-understand way. I especially liked examples from the authors' personal lives, the numerous examples offering help and ideas in implementing the main messages of each section and the self-reflection points at the end of the chapters. I think if you actually sit down to answer the questions or do the activities, it can actually lead to some self discovery. This combination helps the reader really "get it" without it sounding preachy or undoable.The analogies to gardening make this an especially delightful read! The Marriage Garden is a very positive, hopeful and uplifting resource that acknowledges marriages are unique and take work to grow (years of constant evolution, or shall I say gardening, weeding, feeding and pruning). It does make the reader feel that the effort of marriage is worthwhile. I have already given this book to family and friends as gifts (even those married a long time!). Although the book's title implies it is focused on marriages, it really is also a great resource for dating couples, or anyone who wants to enter a romantic relationship.

I have long been fans of the authors, since I first saw them at a marriage conference (Smart Marriages) 4 years ago. They are warm, thoughtful, and as they say in Rhode Island, "Wicked Smart!" The concepts in this book reflect the personalities and skills of the authors. Easy to read and very useful. I hope about a gizillion marriages are saved by this book. They can be with this book.
